7 Reasons NOT to Use Pepper Spray

Recently, on some main stream media news channels (go figure) there have been some “experts” recommending wasp spray as a self-defense spray to ward off a home invasion.

Now, if you’re in a bad situation, i.e. no gun and no other weapons, and you happen to have a can of wasp spray I guess it’s better than nothing (or an option). But in general, I don’t like self-defense sprays. Jason Hanson has seven reasons why he doesn’t like them and I agree:

1. Not everyone is affected by sprays. When I was pepper sprayed in the police academy it definitely affected me. But, there were plenty of others who weren’t affected at all and acted like nothing had happened. If you run into a criminal who is immune to pepper spray it will likely not be a good day for you.

2. Wind and misdirection. If you accidentally have the nozzle pointed in the wrong direction or if it’s a windy day and you get blowback in your face, then you may incapacitate yourself, thereby making yourself an easier victim for the criminal.

3. Sunglasses. If a criminal is wearing sunglasses while they try and attack you then the spray won’t get in their eyes and it won’t stop them.

4. If someone attacks you in a parking lot and tries to drag you into the woods to rape and murder you, do you really want to use a spray on them and hope it works, instead of using a gun?

5. If someone kicks in your front door at 3:00am and it looks like a deadly home invasion is about to take place, do you want to bet your life on a bottle of pepper spray (or bear spray or wasp spray)?

6. Most people I know who carry pepper spray, carry it on a keychain that is buried at the bottom of a purse. Since you have only seconds to react to an attack it’s better to have a gun on your hip or in your pocket, or a knife or tactical pen in your pocket that you can draw more quickly and without having to worry about fumbling to push the right button to deploy the spray.

7. I realize that you can pull the trigger and a gun might not fire, which is why you have to learn how to “tap and rack” to clear malfunctions. But, I’ve seen nozzles on pepper sprays that were clogged and all “gunked” up so they wouldn’t fire and no amount of tapping and racking would save the day for those people.

The bottom line is, don’t bet your life on self-defense sprays. They’re poor weapons.

So what about Alternative Weapons? Let’s talk abou that…

You’d Better Have THIS Before You Draw A Gun…

If you’ve ever fired a gun before, you know this simple truth.

The only “Gun Control” that matters is being able to hit your target on the first shot.

What I want to place in your hands today is a proven way to learn deadly accuracy with your handgun.

This ex-CIA spook reveals proven techniques for hitting your target even when bullets are whizzing by your head.

What About Alternative Weapons?

There are a lot of people talking about alternative weapons these days. I see articles written about anything from PVC bows to using tear gas against an armed invader.

I honestly have to wonder about some these authors, if they really intend on depending on what they wrote about to keep themselves alive. If not, why are they writing it?

There’s a reason why guns are the weapon of choice for both good guys and bad.

That’s because they are the most dependable, easiest to use and most effective weapon available for the average citizen to buy. Grenades might be more effective in some situations, as well as flame throwers, but those aren’t really all that easy to come by. Besides, you have to have a special license from ATF to own them.

The point is, a 90 year old, frail, weak, grandmother has the strength to aim a Glock and pull a 5 pound trigger at a 250 pound pissed off, blood thirsty, prison hardened gang banger — and that bullet will still be just as effective at stopping the threat as any other.

Guns are equalizers.

Using anything less than a gun means that you’re giving the advantage to the enemy. The bad guys will most likely be armed with guns, so if you have something less, they will definitely have the advantage.

Of course, that’s what liberals are trying to do, take the guns away from the good guys, which means that only the bad guys and the government will have the guns. If that were to happen, we will be nothing more than victims of one group or the other.

So, does this mean that there is no place for any other types of weapons?

Not necessarily. As I just mentioned, the liberals are still trying to take away our gun rights and aren’t likely to give up. If they ever get control of both houses of Congress again, along with the White House, they might just succeed in making our guns illegal. If that happens, we’ll need something else.

There’s another reason to have alternate weapons as well. That’s for the time when you can’t use a gun. You might be in a situation where using a gun would put family members at risk.

I can’t see shooting a bad guy that’s holding my wife or daughter, unless it’s a last resort, can you? What if you’re holding a rifle and shooting them means that there’s a chance that the bullet might pass through the bad guy and end up in a family member; can you shoot them then? It might help to have some alternatives.

So, there is a place for alternate weapons, they are for use when you can’t use a firearm. They are a form of backup, something to be used only in the direst of circumstances, when you can’t use what you would normally use.

Having said that, it’s not enough to just own those alternative weapons, you have to practice using them.

They aren’t going to be the least bit of good, if you can’t use them effectively.

Can you imagine going hunting with a bow and arrow, if you’ve never shot one before? Well then, what makes you think you can use a taser or a knife against an armed intruder, if you’ve never tried using one before? For that matter, what makes you think you can use any alternative weapon effectively that you haven’t practiced with?

Go ahead and get some alternative weapons if you want to. Put them in strategic places around your home. But learn how to use them effectively.

When the time comes, use them with all the violence that you can, so that they will do the most possible damage. That’s the only way that they will do you any good.
